Joy Higgins - Biography

I paint.

Joy Higgins is an American Filipina multimedia artist. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Art with an emphasis in Art History, Theory and Criticism. Joy earned her Master of Fine Art from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2020. While primarily an oil painter, she is equally confident with acrylic and encaustic painting. In addition to painting, Joy uses photography, fiber arts and artist books to explore the intersection of human experience and consciousness.

The human body and its perceptions are a focal point from which she primarily conceives her work. Informed by a labor and delivery nurse career and over twenty five years of yoga practice and Hindu/Buddhist philosophical studies, Joy explores subtle themes which include investigations into ego-identity, Self, relationships, transformation, interoception and what she calls “Uniception” - the experience of unity with all phenomena.

Joy is a member of the Chicago Artist Coalition.  Her work has been exhibited in the Chicagoland area. She is a mother of adult triplets and currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois and Riviera Beach, Florida with her husband of 25 years.
